About Kate Lewis - Psychodynamic Psychotherapist (MBACP) Buckhurst Hill, Chelmsford & Online

Kate Lewis Counsellor and Therapist Buckhurst Hill Essex and Online

My Journey to Psychotherapy

I’m a Psychodynamic Psychotherapist and counsellor, registered with the BACP (MBACP), and the way I work today has been shaped by where I started. Before training in psychotherapy, I spent over 15 years working with the body as a Sports Therapist and Clinical Pilates teacher. Over and over, I watched clients carry physical pain that no amount of stretching, strengthening, or manual therapy could fully resolve. That repeated pattern is what led me to retrain in psychotherapy and complete a 5 years intensive (level 7) training, which requires me to be in therapy throughout. My own therapy over many years has also enabled me to delve deep into the psyche and help clients with deep structural, lasting change.

That background now shapes everything about how I practise. I bring a deep, practical understanding embodiment into the therapy room — something most talk-based therapists simply haven’t trained in.

I’ve supported clients struggling with  a wide range of difficulties, including complex grief, loss, anxiety, trauma, depression, life transitions, chronic pain, shame, alongside many more.  This experience means I’m especially attuned to the physical symptoms that can arise from deep emotional pain,  a racing heart, tension, or the feeling of being constantly on high alert.

My Approach to Therapy

In our sessions, we’ll talk through past experiences, trauma, and relationship patterns — the things you’d expect from talking therapy. But therapy with me is also embodied. Depending on what feels right for you on a given day, we may include gentle breathwork, grounding techniques, or simple exercises to release tension held in the neck, back, or chest.

You’ll learn practical, evidence-informed strategies to calm your nervous system, reconnect with your body, and reduce the physical impact of anxiety — alongside the emotional understanding that creates lasting change.

Therapy offers a quiet, safe space to reconnect with yourself. My role is to help you find your own sense of calm and clarity, so you can move through challenges with more confidence. Real, lasting change happens within a trusting therapeutic relationship — one where you can explore your emotions, understand what’s driving them, and gently shift the patterns that no longer serve you.

Training, Qualifications & Experience

I have completed five years of training in psychotherapy:

  • Postgraduate Diploma in Psychodynamic Psychotherapy (2-year training, Level 7 / Masters level)
  • Diploma in Psychodynamic Psychotherapy (3-year diploma, Level 5 / degree level)

I regularly undertake continued professional development (CPD) and have been trained in:

  • Intrusive thoughts

How therapy can help Areas where therapy can offer meaningful support

Psychotherapy offers a supportive, non-judgmental space to understand yourself and navigate life’s challenges. It can ease the weight of depression, help you build practical tools to cope with anxiety, and provide guidance through major life transitions. Therapy also supports you in processing grief and healing from trauma at your own pace. Over time, it can reduce burnout and overwhelm by helping you develop healthier boundaries, clearer perspectives, and more sustainable ways of living.
